According to the UN, 68% of the world population will live in urban areas by 2050. As the largest university of applied sciences in the Netherlands, we play a key role in addressing the challenges presented by urban life. Research across our 7 faculties tackles diverse issues, spanning technology to business, social sciences, health, economics and more. Our ‘laboratory’ approach ensures direct interaction and impact with society, as  we learn, experiment and innovate in field labs and living labs across Amsterdam. The city truly is our inspiration, and our classroom.

Via co-creation with our stakeholders, we work on practical and impactful solutions to issues high on the EU Urban Agenda: from the decarbonisation of cities and transportation, the circular economy, demographic challenges, digital connectivity, infrastructure and the usage of Big Data, to name a few.

Our research ambitions extend beyond Amsterdam, evidenced by our diverse international projects.

Research facts:

  • 60 research groups, led by professors with strong expertise in practice based research.
  • AUAS spearheaded the U!REKA consortium, which now spans 8 European knowledge institutions collaborating on cross-border urban research.
